Chives are the smallest species of the onion family. They are native to Europe, Asia and North America. They are referred to in plural because they grow in bunches instead of growing as individual plants. Lavender flowers appear on this perennial in June. They have a mild onion flavor and are used for culinary purposes as a flavoring herb. Florets are broken apart and used in salads, cooked vegetables, casseroles, potatoes, eggs or cream cheese.
